George Pappas, lead singer and musician for The Homily, was gearing up to record some tunes soon and needed photography for promotional purposes. With the lyrics of his song The Breast & The Beloved floating through my mind: “Like a fire burning through our self-made prisons…” we lit a bright blue smoke bomb and let the wind decide the rest.
I must say, this was one of the harder shoots I’ve done. Photography is a balancing act. You have to pay attention to so many factors at once: the subject, the background, the settings, the light, the timing, the angle, and so on. Now add unruly smoke that lasts just over 30 seconds in unpredictable wind to the mix and you get a real challenge! It was a fun experiment.
